Fourteen Ways to Keep your Bathroom Safe for your Toddler
- Get a toilet lock. A toilet lock will keep hands out of less than clean water. It can also prevent accidental drowning.
- Turn the water heater temperature down. The temperature at the tap should be no more than 114 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Lock up medicines. The medicine cabinet is NOT a safe place to keep your medicine. Get a locked container and keep it locked.
- Lock up cleaners and other chemicals. You should read the warning labels on some of that stuff.
- Keep toilet cleaning brushes and plungers out of reach. They are just filled with germs.
- Always use a bath mat in the bathtub. Toddlers are still somewhat awkward and are far more likely to slip in the tub.
- Use child safety lock on bathroom cabinets.
- Put a pad or cover on bathtub faucet. Not only will they reduce the likelihood of injury with a fall, but they deter your child from trying to climb on the faucet.
- Give your toddler a rug, towel or other non slippery surface to step out of the tub onto. Tiles and linoleum are quite slippery when wet.
- Keep a door knob lock on the bathroom door and keep the bathroom door shut at all times.
- Replace all standard electric outlets with GFCI outlets in the bathroom. GFCI outlets will protect you and your toddlers from electrocution if an electrical appliance ever comes into contact with water.
- Encourage your toddler to use a potty chair rather than climb on the toilet. The potty rings can be used for older toddlers who have mastered the potty chair.
- Be cautious about using bubble baths. Not only are they slippery but the use of bubble bath can lead to urinary tract irritation or possible infections.
- NEVER leave your toddler unattended in the bathroom.
